As the art style evolves in Arena of Valor with new heroes and concepts, it is inevitable that previous designs may sometimes feel outdated. Thus, it is imperative for us to not only focus on new designs, but revisit some of our previous releases.
Butterfly is a popular assassin, and her stylishly ruthless twintail hair has made a lasting impression on many players. This means that any redesign to her look comes with a risk.
Earlier this year, we asked players for their input and presented five different concepts for her redesign. Her background story has also been changed, which influenced the final design we went with.
Butterfly is a professional mercenary hired by Astrid. Her cloak not only signifies her status in the army, but also provides defense. Its exquisite collar indicates that she is ranks above other soldiers.
A key trait of Butterfly is her agility, so we did away with cumbersome accessories from her previous design. We didn't want to completely deviate from the look that players have come to know, so we stuck closely to her original color scheme and of course kept the twintails hairstyle.
In the end, we opted to move forward with Proposal E pictured above.
Butterfly's visual model isn't all that has changed. Check out hero introduction in the lobby display and discover new pre-battle animations that are much more suited for her new look.
For Butterfly's 3D model, we used next-gen production methods to enhance the sense of volume and define the curves of her body. The texture of the leather she wears is now more noticeable and sufficiently detailed, even with the simple design.
